What this site is all about
The title
The URL of this site is relevant to its
content. It is written by me - but it is
not about me, it is about bookcraft ~
the hobby of making books. I reserve
the term bookbinding for the
profession of bookmaking.
Content
The site is a summary of some aspects
of bookcraft gleaned by me over the
fifty five years since I trained in the subject. I have been writing my thoughts and ~ I
hope ~ helpful comments for several years, and gradually developed a style. The
magic of the WWW turns a set of disjointed topics into a ready-reference-wiki
discourse. Because so many bookcraft ideas are also general craft skills ~ and
because I also trained as a cabinet-maker ~ I have merged the writings into a parent
site called busybusydotco.
Style
I was taught by the scientists ~ at school and university ~ to write in the passive
tense…“A glass tube was taken and filled with water…”. That seemed to be too
authoritative a style for my informal approach to the site. I am not writing the
definitive text book on the subject ~ there are several of those that cover almost
every topic in excellent detail. I am writing my thoughts ~ and you are welcome to
disagree or disregard them. So I have adopted an unashamedly first-person style ~
witout ~I hope ~ being too subjective in my likes or dislikes. If you don’t like it you
have not lost any money by buying a book ~ and you are are welcome to go
elsewhere. There is a lot of really good stuff ~ easily found ~ on the WWW already.
On-line
The two huge advantages of on-line writing are the ease of following links and the
ability to provide an abundance of illustrations. There are no adverts or other
distractions. If something is mistaken or not clear enough I will try to revise it ~ but I
need someone to point it out first ~ mail@highview.co.uk
Technical Stuff
The original intention was to limit each topic to a single page of a desktop PC. My
ability to waffle soon put an end to that. The opening pages ~ such as this ~ have
been constructed with the help of template software by the England-based team at
Xara. The main knowledge base was originally written in simple HTML code, and I
have no desire or time to re-write it. It serves the purpose well, and has the
additional advantage of being completely responsive. Such matters are under the
busybusy.co banner ~ a separate site, but seamlessly linked to bookcraft.me.
Links
There are numerous links everywhere on the busybusydotco site. Some explanation
may be needed ~ and I will jot it down indue course. Meanwhile ~ please enjoy what
you can!
